The United States Securities and Exchange Commission has introduced an online tool that enables individual investors to search the SEC database for investment advisors who have a history of trouble. This search, nicknamed SALI (SEC Action Lookup for Individuals), will identify both registered and unregistered investment advisors who have court judgments or SEC orders against them. Jay Clayton, SEC Chairman states that one of the SEC’s most important tasks is to arm investors with the tools necessary to identify potential fraudsters. Being able to determine whether the person you are dealing with has a disciplinary history with the SEC or other regulators, is a strong tool for investors to use in determining their level of risk. Though it is expected to be updated periodically, at present, SALI searches encompass SEC actions filed between October 1, 2014 and March 31, 2018.
