Both types seek to resolve disputes without drawn out and expensive lawsuits.

Where a neutral person, usually a retired Judge, helps the parties try and resolve their dispute. No one decides the outcome for the parties. The parties themselves decide the outcome.

An informal trial where the parties put on evidence, and a neutral third party, usually a retired Judge, decides the outcome.
